Surgical Oncologist, Bengaluru
Dr Prabhat Yaji is a surgical oncologist in Bengaluru with a focused practice in peritoneal surface malignancies and complex cancer surgery. He practises full-time at ARC Cancer Hospital (Arion Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre), Wilson Garden.
His approach rests on three principles: precision, evidence-based decisions and patient-centred care. For Dr Yaji, cancer surgery is not simply about removing a tumour. It is about understanding the disease, judging what can be achieved safely and completely, and choosing a treatment path that weighs both cancer control and the patient’s quality of life.
A career built in surgical oncology
Dr Yaji’s formal training in surgical oncology includes an MCh in Surgical Oncology from Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, after an MS in General Surgery from Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences.
He began his career after specialisation as a Senior Resident at KMC Manipal, then worked as a Surgical Oncologist at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals and SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru.
These roles gave him a broad understanding of cancer surgery across different parts of the body, and shaped his focused interest in technically complex abdominal and peritoneal cancers. Today he brings this experience to his full-time practice at ARC Cancer Hospital.

A focus on peritoneal surface malignancy
Peritoneal surface malignancies need a different surgical view. Unlike a cancer limited to one organ, peritoneal disease can involve many surfaces and structures inside the abdomen.
Treatment may need extensive planning, meticulous cytoreductive surgery and, in carefully selected patients, advanced treatments inside the abdomen such as HIPEC. Dr Yaji’s work involves assessing the extent and biology of peritoneal disease, deciding whether meaningful cytoreduction is achievable, and working with a multidisciplinary team on the right treatment plan.
His interest also extends to evolving approaches such as PIPAC (pressurised intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy), an area of continuing research and clinical development. The page on peritoneal cancer, CRS and HIPEC explains these treatments in detail.
Specialised surgery is about knowing which patient may benefit, which treatment is right, and what can realistically be achieved.
Precision with purpose
Technology and surgical technique are important tools in modern cancer care. But Dr Yaji believes technique must always serve the larger cancer goal.
Depending on the tumour, its stage, position and extent, treatment may involve open, laparoscopic or robotic surgery. The approach is chosen for what gives the right tumour clearance while keeping surgery safe. This matters most in complex cancer surgery, where the extent of the disease matters more than the size of the cut. Read more about minimally invasive cancer surgery.
Patient-centred cancer care
A cancer diagnosis affects much more than the organ where the disease is found.
Dr Yaji believes patients should understand their diagnosis, the treatment options and the reasons behind the recommended plan. Honest conversations about the possible benefits, limits, risks and recovery of major cancer surgery are a core part of his practice.
For complex operations such as cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, this matters even more. These are major operations that need careful preparation, recovery and coordinated team care. The aim is not simply to complete an operation. It is to help the patient through the whole treatment journey with clarity and realistic expectations.

Evidence, ethics and experience
Dr Yaji describes his approach as ethical, evidence-based and patient-centred cancer care. His time across surgical oncology institutions, together with his focused work in peritoneal surface malignancy, informs a practice where treatment decisions are made for the individual, not driven by a single technique or procedure.
For him, experience in complex cancer surgery is about making better decisions: understanding when aggressive treatment may help, recognising when a particular approach may not be right, and keeping the patient’s long-term wellbeing at the centre of the plan.
